Ronaldo Lemos says that Sony offers 13 new CDs a year to all of Brazil. But there is tremendous activity online. But sites like TramaVirtual only works for people with computers. His group researched Nigeria, Brazil, Colombia and Argentina. E.g., in the Brazilian province of Parà “tehcnobrega” (cheesy techno) is popular. There every year they produce 400 cds and 100 dvds. We’re getting reports that Peerflix, the tumultuous company that switched from acting as a DVD-swapping service to an ad network, has been acquired by Brad Greenspan’s LiveUniverse for an undisclosed amount (though we’re guessing it’s pretty low). We’ve asked LiveUniverse to comment.

There have been lots of talk about cloud services but the oldest and one of the best is probably Amazon S3 which provides large amounts of free storage. With one catch - it really only provides an API to interact with its bucket structure. This has led to many tools such as Jungle Disk, Bucket Explorer etc which are OK but restrict you to your PC and have their own foibles.Now, I have been using Amazon S3 with two accounts. I spent the afternoon playing around with Google Gears in order to get a basic feel for how it works. Specifically, I wanted to see how much work it would take to add support for offline viewing for tostring.org (an online book site).

Per a recent press release, TIBCO has completed its acquisition of Insightful, known for its S+ statistics language (and with a common ancestry with the open source R langage) as used, amongst others, in the financial industry. S+ and R have had a few mentions in recent CEP blogs:

“This is the best browser so far” is that I can say after being a Chrome user for one day.
First of all, I was glad to find out that I haven’t found Chrome breaking any web application yet, especially Ajax applications. I was a little concerned about this, given that the Chrome cartoons say “Javascript runs in its own thread”, which is different from the threading model today.

Google Chrome, a new open-source browser from Google that builds in parts on Apple's WebKit and in parts on Mozilla Firefox, was announced yesterday and just launched today at 3:02 pm EDT. Here is an interesting twist: most of the technical details about Chrome cannot be found in blog postings or technical web documentation, but rather in the form of a comic book. Talk about weird! In past 'Mashups in Action' blog we have described mashups used in intelligence analysis, medical research, and most recently a dual-purpose community-building/data-sharing effort for a scientific community. As of this week you can download an early release draft document containing 11 design documents we've been working on for the past year or so as the result of the OSGi enterprise initiative.
This is important because according to OSGi Alliance rules, only members are allowed access to working drafts of documents. This is the first time we've released any of these drafts publicly.
